FAQ

Q: What is Otherkin(d)?

A: "Otherkin(d)" is a label in the overarching alterhuman community that refers to an identity as something nonhuman. The identity is non-physical in nature. There are different subsets of otherkinity, including therianthropy (identification as a real world animal) or fictionkin(d) (identification as a fictional character or creature.)

Q: What is Alterhumanity?

A: Alterhumanity refers to an atypical human experience. People who are alterhuman experience humanity differently from the standard way humanity is felt and experienced. This can range from someone who identifies completely as human but has an intrinsic connection to foxes to someone who identifies as a dragon and completely disregards the label of "human."

Q: Alterhumanity versus Nonhuman

You may find some people around alterhuman spaces who identify strictly as nonhuman. These people may or may not identify with the label of "alterhuman." Identifying as nonhuman means that someone does not see themself as human whatsoever, aside from knowing that they are physically human. Some who hold this identity use it as opposed to "alterhuman" because they feel that they do not experience humanity differently, they are just completely inhuman.

Q: "Delusional Attachments" and "IRLs" vs Otherkinity

A: One belief as to the origin of some people's alterhuman identity is that it stems from something psychological. Delusional attachments (hereby to be referred to as "DAs") and IRLs are those who are suffering from delusions that impact their identity and self-perception, leading them to identify as something nonhuman and/ore fictitious.

Some who experience these kinds of delusions may identify as alterhuman or as psychologically otherkin, because their nonhuman identity is psychological in nature. However, not all alterhumans with psychological identities are delusional or psychotic. Other forms of psychological alterhumanity could be having an identity from the following:

  • Imprinting
  • Hyperfixations from neurodivergence
  • Ideas of reference, magical thinking, and other minor positive symptoms that sit just outside of psychosis

Another important thing to remember is that the terms "DA" and "IRL" are not great terms to use to describe your identity in the alterhuman community. This is because these terms were created as a way to mock the otherkin(d) community. Outsiders looking in will forcefully put these labels on people in the alterhuman community because they have created a narrative that alterhumans, and more specifically otherkin(d) are delusional and mentally unwell. This can be from people who are actively trying to do harm, but it also comes from people who fundamentally do not understand that otherkinity really is. If you are an alterhuman whose identity is cause by or highly influenced by psychosis and delusions, it is much more appropriate to use the term "endel."

Q: What is the Difference Between Otherkin and Plurality?

A: Plurality is the phenomenon of multiple people inhabiting one brain and body. Plural systems may include members who are nonhuman (referred to as "extranthropes,") fictional characters (referred to as "fictives,") or based off of real people (referred to as "factives.") Systems may or may not identify as otherkin, but plurality and otherkinity are two very different things. You do not have to experience plurality to be otherkin, nor do otherkin feel that their kintypes are separate, distinct beings from themselves. Otherkin indiviuals identify AS their kintypes, so, their self and their kintype are one in the same.

Q: How do I Know if I'm Otherkin?

A: This is a common question among younger newcomers to the community. And, in all honesty, there isn't an easy or convenient answer to this question, since identity is something so greatly personal unique to each individual. If you feel that you are not human, and you decide that you want to identify in a way that isn't human, then, by all means go for it. If the label of otherkin fits, then, use it.
