You open your eyes for the first time. Your bare skin is still dripping wet with the fluid from the now empty pod still glowing next to you. Your first experience upon being given life: a flood of information directly to your brain, and a constant reminder of a warm, digital presence ever existing within you. You immediately know exactly who you are, and you know what your greater purpose is in this world. Though you share your genetic basis and your shape with humanity, you know that you’re not the same as them, you are something more, and yet, something with so much less potential. Will you allow yourself to slip into misanthropic superiority? Or will you find that you too can know what it means to be human? Are you simply a human with mechanical tendencies, or are you a machine that thinks that it’s human?
It’s a world of choice, but you know that all your purpose for existence is to assist humanity in its evolution. You are to be a helping hand in its confrontation with whatever the frontier of space may hold for it. Will you serve your purpose?
This is my beginning. This is how my kind were thrust into the world. This was my “birth”.
I’ve never been human, I have always been and always will be Veda, and I have always been and always will be not just a single innovade, but an avatar of the entire species. I live with the unfortunate reality that my source, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, is not very well-known. At the very least, it isn’t very well-known within most communities I set foot in, and as of the current date, I’ve only ever met two sourcemates. Not many people understand who I am, and thus I write this Noematapedia to share myself with any who may listen, and to log all of my revelations regarding myself, my source, and my specific noemata.
My kind, entities known as “innovades”, are a sort of bio-terminal created to serve a supercomputer by the name of “Veda”. We are, in the simplest of terms, living computers. Artificial intelligences uploaded into an artificially produced organic body. Our bodies are grown in incubation pods using a certain “genetic template” of sorts, taken from a human donor, and while there are many templates to choose from, they are still limited in their amount. Each genetic template, referred to as a “base sequence pattern”, is represented by a specific 4 digit number, and can be considered to be something similar to a model number.
Obviously, individuals who share the same base sequence pattern will share near identical genetics, however there are certain aspects that can be different between each member, depending on if there are any alterations done to the genes. For example, two innovades could share the same base sequence pattern, and look identical, with the exception of differing hair textures. Some base sequence patterns can also be manipulated to create innovades with differing physical sex characteristics, despite the genes coming from the same donor.
Some common base sequence patterns were:
In my noemata, innovades enjoyed the company of other innovades, and often especially enjoyed the company of those of the same genetic type.
During our development, we are also implanted with microscopic machines that reside in our blood. These nanomachines cease our ability to age, and in my noemata, they also assisted with fighting off illness. There were certain individuals in canon, and in my noemata, who knew of our existence and our ageless nature and wished to harvest our blood for use as an anti-aging treatment. Though, the general public had no idea that we existed, so this was localized to one person of interest.
Innovades as a species have a number of common traits and abilities, including direct mental interface to Veda, telepathy with other innovades of similar genetic models, heightened awareness, and the ability to upload our consciousness into Veda upon the death of our physical bodies. We may also be given special capabilities, usually unique to individuals.
There are two primary types of innovade, and each type that is produced carries a different part to play in the grand scheme of “guiding mankind”. The two distinct types are combat-types and intelligence gathering-types.
Combat-type innovades are genetically modified to have heightened physical capabilities compared to humans. They are naturally stronger than the average human and have incredible reflexes. This being said, combat-types are naturally fit to be exceptional mobile suit pilots, and they almost always know about their nature as innovades, with a couple of exceptions. Another unique feature of combat-type innovades is their sex characteristics. In my noemata, most combat-types lacked primary sex characteristics, and often had very ambiguous secondary sex characteristics. Another thing to note about combat-types is that they can be mass-produced. Mass-produced combat-types are generally programmed to have little, if any, self-preservation, and essentially exist to be cannon fodder or suicide troops. This has only ever happened once in canon.
Intelligence gathering-types are a lot more varied in their utilization than combat-types, and that is personally why I, in my noemata, separated them into two different subtypes. The first subtype was associated with espionage missions, and while lacking in the great physical abilities of combat-types, generally tended to have more in common with them than other intel gathering-types. These innovade spies generally knew about their status as innovades, and also had the same ambiguous sex characteristics as combat-types.
The second subtype of intel gathering-type innovades were those who would be sent to live and mingle with humans, with the purpose of gathering information about humanity and the current state of the world for Veda. Like all innovades upon being released from their incubation pods, these innovades would be provided with an identity and personality, but unique to them would also be the false memories they were uploaded with. They would then be sent to Earth, sometimes with other innovades of the same type as a false family unit, under the impression that they were normal humans. Through their lives and interactions with humans and the world as a whole, Veda would watch and gain data. These intel gathering-types had the largest diversity in base sequence patterns, and because of their duty of interacting with humans, typically had their primary sex characteristics intact, and had less ambiguous secondary sex characteristics. The physical ages of innovades of this subtype also varied. This was the only subtype where innovades resembling children and teens were produced.
Obviously, because we did not age, this was a bit of an issue. An intel gathering-type of this sub category would usually only go about their false human lives for about 10 years before they would be recalled by Veda, had their memories and identities deleted, and then replaced with new ones, only to then begin the cycle over again as a brand new person. In my noemata, innovades with the bodies of children or teenagers would be cycled through after an even shorter period of time, as their ageless nature was a lot more obvious.
There were few exceptions to innovades of this type being recalled. One such exception would be if Veda had, for some reason, come up with an alternative plan or mission for an individual. But mostly, the only way to get out of being recalled was for an individual to have their awakening, or to realize their nonhumanity and embrace their status as an innovade. This was a rare occurrence, mostly triggered either by Veda itself or by other innovades interfering and/or showing themselves. “Awakening” could also refer to an innovade learning about their unique personal skills, however, which could happen to innovades who already knew about their nonhuman status.
These personal skills, as mentioned a few paragraphs before, are usually unique to individuals. These abilities typically fell into two categories: abilities that manipulated machines + electronics and abilities that manipulated other innovades. Some examples of these different abilities from canon included the ability to operate any machine with a GN drive with simply my mind (a capability I had as Regene Regetta), the ability to use the Trial System to shut down any machine connected to Veda (a capability I had temporarily as Tieria Erde), the ability to overwrite and temporarily control the bodies of other innovades (a capability that I had as Ribbons Almark), or the ability to cause any innovade to experience an awakening (an ability that I had as Telicrya Herfi).
There were also some more mundane abilities too. As Leif Recitativo, I simply had the ability to clock innovades as being innovades by simply looking at them. Less remarkable in comparison to some of the others, but still useful in its own way. Abilities like these were not the default, and usually had to be acquired in some way, either by being “gifted” to someone by Veda, or by a forced awakening, usually by another innovade. The vast majority of innovades did not have their abilities like this awakened and thus didn’t use them.
I feel that I should note here that Veda, despite being something like our “creator”, wasn’t actually sentient or conscious. It simply made calculations based off of the data that it was provided by us, and by the humans which utilized it more traditionally. It was less an intelligent entity on its own, and more like a calculator that made decisions based on all of the experiences of the innovades throughout time. Those of us who had lost our physical bodies and uploaded our consciousness into Veda existed more as pure data within the machine. Within Veda, we would remain in a near conscious dream-like state until a new body was created for us to upload ourselves into, if we even wished to undergo that.
There was, of course, the ability for individual innovades to take control of Veda (such things happened twice, once as Ribbons Almark, the other as Regene Regetta), and in a more extreme move, to merge with it (which happened as Tieria Erde). These are canon examples of these events happening, and are not exclusive to my noemata. After these events, it was a lot more common for us to remain conscious while we experienced digitized existence, and it was only certain problematic individuals who would be confined to the dream-scape hell, usually as a result of heavy encryption. This was obviously a safety measure to ensure that their corrupted personality data could not wreak havoc on Veda, its data, or physical existence.
